Drug abuse treatment is one of the main ways to curb drug abuse

Drug abuse treatment is one of the main ways to curb drug abuse in our society. The need for such treatments is highlighted by the alarming rate of deaths from drug abuse. With every drug-related tragedy, there is a need for effective and successful treatment. Treatment centers use a variety of treatment strategies to combat drug abuse and addiction.

Multi-systemic treatment (MST) is one of the popular treatments available these days. This treatment approach addresses the problem of drug abuse with a range of treatment facilities that reach out to patients, family, friends, colleagues and health care workers. MST is also called “disease-focused treatment.” This approach addresses drug abuse specifically, hence eliminating the root cause of drug abuse. Drug abuse treatment under the influence of alcohol and drugs can cause many devastating effects on the physical and psychological health of the patient.

Drug abuse becomes a matter of grave concern when it affects not only the abusers but their loved ones as well. Most of the addicts have a profound mental disorder that makes them want to go back to drugs. It is therefore important that the patients are treated well in an environment which provides the much-needed psychological support. However, drug rehabs do not offer this type of assistance. The patients have to take care themselves.

There are many people who become addicted to a particular drug. When they go through a long-term crisis, they need help in the form of professional help. This type of treatment is offered under the guidance of trained counselors. Counselors try to empower patients so that they are able to resist peer pressure to consume drugs.

The various treatment approaches can be broadly classified into two – medications and behavioral therapy. Medications are often used to treat drug abuse. Anti-psychotics and anti-depressants are some of the drugs that are prescribed for the treatment. The most common among these drugs are Clomipramine (also known as Anafranil) and Anafranil (also known as Norpramin). Both of these drugs act on the serotonin system and hence, help patients suffering from depression and anxiety. However, Clomipramine is reported to have serious side effects such as hallucinations, headache, restlessness, and nervousness.

In addition, some anti-psychotics act by slowing down the nervous system, thereby bringing about a state of calmness and tranquility. In short, behavioral therapy is a way of helping drug abuse patients face up to their problems. The patients have to first face up to their addiction through the appropriate treatment. If this happens, the patient will be able to stay away from drugs and thus, prevent the recurrence of addiction. If the drug abuse persists despite the presence of medication, it might mean that other avenues of treatment should be explored.
